2010 ETC Singles Ladder
Katy Koch 519-833-0020
The 2010 ladder will run
from May 16 through to mid August.
Our singles ladder is for
players of all levels who are interested in improving their game by
playing more often.
The ladder works through a
challenge system. It is up to the individual players to challenge other
players in their bracket as published on the ladder portal. Those who win
their brackets move up and those who come last (or default) move down.
You will naturally gravitate to a level where you are getting
consistently good matches.
We have one ladder for both
men and women combined. Courts are available on Monday evenings,
Thursdays (one court) and Fridays. Of course the weekends are open for
singles play.
The end of season singles
tournament will have both men’s and ladies singles categories and
the first round of the season-ending tournament will begin in Mid-August.
Set up your own game times
The
advantage of the ladder is the flexibility in scheduling. Due to work and
travel schedules, players can find it hard to get out and play when games
are on a set night.
Choose the length of match
You
can also agree to a length of match with your opponent. If your time is
short, you can choose to play 1 set or an 8 or 10 game proset. If you
have plenty of time you can play best 2 of 3 sets. It is up to you. The
winner is responsible for reporting the scores.
Complete Challenge Ladder Rules
1. The initial ranking of
players on a ladder is based on players rankings at the end of last
season and/or on skill level or provided ratings. Unrated players and
players joining in late, will be added to the bottom of the ladder.
2. Players have two weeks to try to get in two games. If you are
challenged to play by someone in your bracket, you must try to accommodate
the game within the two weeks or forfeit your match and one point to the
challenger.
3. Results of matches from challenges from players outside your
bracket will have no effect on standings (you must play within your own
bracket to affect the standings).
4. Members are not required to accept more than two challenges in
the two week period. Playing the same player a second time in the two
week period will not affect the standings.
5. The challenged player may select the time and location of the
match; however, the time and location should be mutually agreeable to
both players.
6. A withdrawn or cancelled challenge is a default loss for the
challenger. 15 minutes late is considered a default.
7. The challenger is responsible for providing tennis balls, in
good condition, for the match. It is generally best to have a new can
available in case it is needed.
8. The standard rules of the United States Tennis Association
(USTA) apply to ladder matches. The usual method of scoring is based on
winning two of three sets, with a tie-break at the end of any set that
reaches a score of six games each. In the tie-break, the first to win
seven points wins the set, but must win by at least two points. Alternatively,
players may use any mutually agreeable method of scoring.
9. The ladder rankings are
posted on the portal described below in point 12.
10. The rules will be
interpreted and disputes between members will be settled at the sole
discretion of the ladder administrator.
11. As is prudent in any recreational activity, and especially
when involved with others, members should exercise due care in their
involvement in a challenge ladder. The operators of the ladder cannot be
responsible for injury to members or others, damage to property, or other
liability arising out of membership in and use of the challenge ladder.
By participating in a challenge ladder, each member accepts and agrees to
abide by its rules.
12. The Ladder portal will be used to manage the ladder
this year. It removes the arduous
task in the past of receiving everyone’s result by email, sorting
and making changes to the website.
In this process, you will be submitting your results to the
website portal, and a script that runs every Monday morning at 11:00am
throughout the season that will automatically create the ladder
results. Make sure you or your
opponent has visited the portal to record your score by this deadline.
13. Both Winner/Loser can record the result. It should be done by midnight on
Sunday. Those of you without
internet access, please call in your scores to the administrator by
9:30pm Sunday. You are encouraged
to enter your results. There is no
guarantee the administrator is available at all time, so do not wait until
the last minute if you need assistance.
Sample challenge
In the sample
below, Yannick Noah (player 5) would be able to challenge Pete and Jimmy.
Noah gets a point for each game he plays or challenges up to two games in
two weeks. For each win (or default win from an opponent who can't play)
he collects another point. If Noah wins both his challenges and Pete
defeats Jimmy, Noah would move into the (3) position (having gained 4
points), Pete would move into (5), Jimmy would move down a bracket into
(7). Bjorn would move into the (4) spot and a new player would move up
into spot (6).

Holidays and Injuries
If you are away on
holidays, have been injured or are unable to play for any other reason,
you do not drop out of the ladder; however, your spot on the ladder can
be taken by a player who challenges you when you are unable to play.
Match-ups posted on the web site
Again this year,
standings will be posted on the Ladder portal. Players will quickly be
able to see who they are to contact to set up the week's match. Please make sure that results have been
submitted before Monday each week. If game results are not submitted in
time, your scores for the week will not be taken into account for setting
the new standings for the week.

Ladder
Portal for Scores Reporting Instructions:
a). Click here
to access the portal currently hosted by Ben Chambers’ company
servers. Once a player signs up to
play on the ladder, we will need the full name, Email address and
telephone #. A username out of the
full names of players will be created with a default password which can
then be changed on the first login.
Your ladder coordinator will provide you with this info.
b). Enter the assigned Username, then the Password, either hit ENTER or click the Login button. The current two
weeks’ ranking will appear.
Note you only have access to update scores for the other two
players within your bracket.
c). For the bracket of Pete/Yannick/Jimmy, click the pencil icon to the left of the
player’s name to report the outcome of your match. Click Update when finish. Click Current
Standing tab to
return to the previous page OR Click Logout to exit back to the login page.
d). The portal is ‘Player centric’ , enter
Win/Lost from your perspective.
Either you or your opponent can report the scores. In this example, Pete won 6-4, 6-3
against Yannick, and lost 2-6,7-5,5-7 against Jimmy. Pete would click the pencil icon next
to Yannick’s name, click Winner for Pete, enter 6 & 6 for
himself and enter corresponding 4
& 3 for Yannick, then click “Update”. To return, Pete
would click “Current Standing”. Pete would repeat the process
for his game against Jimmy by clicking Jimmy as the Winner, enter 2 &
7 & 5 for his scores and enter corresponding 6 & 5 & 7 for
Jimmy, then click “Update” and “Current standing”
to return. On the “Current Standing” page, Pete sees next to
Yannick’s name, he Won 6-4, 6-3.
Next to Jimmy’s name, he lost 2-6,7-5,5-7. When Jimmy login, Jimmy sees next to
Pete’s name, he won 6-2, 5-7,7-5.
Jimmy can correct the scores and the changes will be reflected
when Pete login.
e). Default
matches, Win/Lost is based on who defaulted to who, leave all scores at
0-0. In this example, Yannick defaulted to Jimmy. Jimmy would login and click the pencil
icon next to Yannick’s name, click Winner for Jimmy, leave the
scores all 0, then ”Update” and “Current Standing”. Jimmy sees next to Yannick’s name
‘Jimmy won by default’.
f). As a
courtesy to your opponent, if you change the scores, please inform the
person.
g). You can email your opponent in your bracket by clicking on the
name box. You can obtain their phone number by hovering your mouse pointer
over the opponents name.
h). The Update My Account Tab can be used to update your personal information. Don’t forget to click Update after you completed your
changes.
i). The Logout option is recommended when you are done with the reporting. Click this tab to exit instead of just
closing the page.
