2007 ETC Men's Ladder
The
2007 Men's ladder will run from May 14 through the end of
August.
The men's
singles ladder provides a great opportunity for players of
varying skill levels to enjoy some competition in singles
play. This will be the third full season of the men's ladder.
Again
this year...
This year,
the men's ladder will be set up with players grouped in brackets
of 3. Players will have two weeks to try to set up a game
with each of the other 2 players in their bracket. Players
will receive a point for each game they play (or each game
forfeited to them) and another point for a win. The player
with the most points moves up a bracket, the player with the
least point moves down and the middle player stays where he
is. If no one gets their games in, the top and bottom players
will still move based on their position in the bracket.
Enjoy
the Challenge
As the
weeks go on, the more skilled players will move up the ladder,
while less developed players will move down. This process
provides a system where we end up matched with players of
our own skill while also providing the challenge of wanting
to climb higher! And since you end up matched with players
of similar skills, it is a great system where both the beginner
and the advanced player can join in and have some fun.
Set
up your own game times
The advantage
of the ladder is the flexibility in scheduling. Due to work
and travel schedules players can find it hard to make it out
to play when games are on a set night. However, the ladder
allows players to set their game times when it's convenient
for both players, within the given week to play.
Choose
the length of match
Players choose how the match will be decided prior to playing.
Some players will want to play a full match (best 2 out of
3 sets). Others may decide to play a pro set (first player
to 8 or 10 games.)
Complete Challenge Ladder Rules
1. The initial ranking of players
on a ladder is based on players rankings at the end of last
season and/or on skill level or provided ratings. Unrated
players and players joining in late, will be added to the
bottom of the ladder.
2. Players have two weeks to try to get in two games.
If you are challenged to play by someone in your bracket,
you must try to accommodate the game within the two weeks
or forfeit your match and one point to the challenger.
3. Results of matches from challenges from players
outside your bracket will have no effect on standings (you
must play within your own bracket to affect the standings).
4. Members are not required to accept more than two
challenges in the two week period. Playing the same player
a second time in the two week period will not affect the standings.
5. The challenged player may select the time and location
of the match; however, the time and location should be mutually
agreeable to both players.
6. Standings will be posted by Tuesday morning each
week. A match must be completed and results submitted prior
to the following Monday to ensure that results are recorded.
A withdrawn or cancelled challenge is a default loss for the
challenger.
7. The challenger is responsible for providing tennis
balls, in good condition, for the match. It is generally best
to have a new can available in case it is needed.
8. The standard rules of the United States Tennis Association
(USTA) apply to ladder matches. The usual method of scoring
is based on winning two of three sets, with a tie-break at
the end of any set that reaches a score of six games each.
In the tie-break, the first to win seven points wins the set,
but must win by at least two points. Alternatively, players
may use any mutually agreeable method of scoring.
9. The winner of the match is responsible for reporting
the results within 24 hours, by contacting the ladder coordinator,
and providing the following information:
- date of the match,
- winner's name,
- loser's name,
- and the match score.
10. The ladder rankings are posted on this page every
week by Tuesday morning.
11. The rules will be interpreted and disputes between
members will be settled at the sole discretion of the ladder
administrator.
12. As is prudent in any recreational activity, and
especially when involved with others, members should exercise
due care in their involvement in a challenge ladder. The operators
of the ladder cannot be responsible for injury to members
or others, damage to property, or other liability arising
out of membership in and use of the challenge ladder. By participating
in a challenge ladder, each member accepts and agrees to abide
by its rules.

Sample
challenge
In the
sample below, Brent Kite (player 5) would be able to challenge
Tom and Mike. Tom gets a point for each game he plays or challenges
up to two games in two weeks. For each win (or default win
from an opponent who can't play) he collects another point.
If Brent wins both his challenges and Tom defeats Mike, Brent
would move into the (3) position (having gained 4 points),
Tom would move into (5), Mike would move down a bracket into
(7). Darrel would move into the (4) spot and a new player
would move up into spot (6).

Holidays and Injuries
If you
are away on holidays, have been injured or are unable to play
for any other reason, you do not drop out of the ladder; however,
your spot on the ladder can be taken by a player who challenges
you when you are unable to play.
Match-ups posted on the web site
Again
this year, standings will be posted on this page of the web
site. Players will quickly be able to see who they are to
contact to set up the week's match. When the match is over,
players simply e-mail their results to mensladder@erintennis.com. Please
make sure that results have been submitted before Monday each
week. If game results are not submitted in time, your scores
for the week will not be taken into account for setting the
new standings for the week.
