President's Remarks

What a year we have planned for you!

The most exciting news for the 2010 season is that the Erin Tennis Club now has a Full-Time Teaching Pro. His name is Doug Ing and he will be bringing a lot of excitement to junior and adult player development. He will be running junior clinics for kids as young as 5 years old. We have invested in special junior nets, balls and racquets to hasten the development and skills for the very young. There will be adult clinics and traveling team clinics that will greatly enhance our playing ability. I urge you all to come out and meet Doug at the final registration day, April 17, where he will be having a free tennis fun day.

Doug will impact the junior program as well. He will be holding clinics after school twice a week Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. There will be a May session and a June session where each participant gets 8 lessons per month for $80 per player. These sessions run from 4 to 6 after school, so there is no conflict with other activities, like soccer or softball.

Glenda Reilly will begin the summer junior program after school ends. The program begins on Tuesday mornings 10 to 11 for beginners and 11 to noon for intermediate and advanced players. These sessions are free with membership and begin July 6th.

Heather Gentles is organizing house league again this year. We will run 8 teams on 5 courts, if we have the numbers to  support the commitment. You play against players of similar ability and we have a lot of fun.

Mark Reilly, our Facilities Captain, has a busy year planned outside, reinforcing the fences so we can have screens and a divider between court 4 and 5 (for lessons). We will also be moving the light switches for the courts inside the clubhouse and adding a security light from the courts to the parking lot.

Washrooms are still uncertain for this season. The school board is tearing out and replacing the current sewage treatment plant this summer and it will not be completed until September.

Shelley and Kim are planning 2 social evenings and I ask you to reserve the evenings of June 21st and August 13 for two very special social tennis events. See inside for details. Also, our year-end gala evening will be held on Saturday, September 25 and I ask that you set this evening aside as well.

Sarah Bartlett is planning an active tournament season. The Spring Fling is held on Saturday, May 14th and the Summer Welcome Tournament is Saturday July 10th. We will have the Bill & Polly Allen Tournament over the months of July and August and the Club Championships during the month of September.

I am particularly proud of the new look the club is getting through its participation on Facebook. Amanda Storey is piloting this project

As always, I thank all those who are contributing toward the organization of a wonderful tennis season. The Executive for the club is listed on the back page and they all have made a significant contribution to the 2010 season.

Brian Gentles, President

ETC Structure

The Erin Tennis Club is a self-financing committee of the Town of Erin. The committee is made up from a dedicated group of volunteers, all of whom are members.  As a self-financing committee, we are responsible for the development of an annual operating plan and for developing a budget to support this plan. Town Council meets annually to review these plans and approved our operating budget.

As a committee, we meet regularly once a month during the season and once over the winter to prepare our plans for the new year. Members are voted onto the committee at the fall Annual General Meeting, although most positions are filled by acclamation. In addition, the committee can appoint members to serve if no other option is available.

Rules and Regulations

Tag Policy: Every member is issued an identification tag at registration. This tag must be visible (can be tied to shoes or attached to a necklace) to ETC personnel whenever you wish to play tennis. The participation and cooperation of every club member is essential to the successful operation of our new club. The enforcement of MEMBERS ONLY playing is especially important now that the tennis courts are located in such a high traffic location. To ensure control of this
programme, ETC personnel have been directed to enforce this rule. There can be no exceptions.

Guest Policy: Guests are welcome any time but must be accompanied by a member. All guests are asked to pay $5.00. There is to be a collection box in the new clubhouse. There is no real way for the ETC to enforce the payment of the guest’s $5.00, therefore we will collect guests fees based on the honour system.

Dress Code: No shirt, no play. Non-marking running shoes must be worn.

Alcohol, Drugs and Smoking Policy:
The ETC is owned by the Town of Erin, and therefore, must comply with town bylaws. ETC will not tolerate the consumption of drugs and/or alcohol on club property. In addition, smoking is not allowed in the clubhouse.

Self-Rating

As the National Tennis Rating Programme has led
to some confusion in the past, we have introduced
a simpler rating system.

A Top club players who are competitive, hit
consistently and would like to play on our
inter-club travelling team.

B Player has good control of serve, forehand and
backhand shots and has a sound foundation for
court positioning.

C Player has some control over serve, forehand and
backhand but is not consistent or confident with
shot selection or court positioning. Typically, you
have played for at least 2 years.

D Player has little or no experience with shot-making,
positioning or scoring.
